Maarja Kangro

One of the most original and compelling writers in contemporary Estonia, based in Tallinn, but spending a lot of time travelling. Her work, which has won numerous literary awards as well as readers' acclaim, gives potent expression to a complex and distinctive take on life, ranging from cynical social comedy, political reportage and intellectual games to profound compassion with physical suffering and bodily fragility. Her short stories are often about the escalation of social misunderstandings and intercultural prejudices, raising questions about injustice, solidarity, and the intricate relations of these phenomena. Her work in all genres is permeated by saturnine humour, relieved by lucid style and real sympathy with everything living (and even unliving).
