Helen Oyeyemi
What is it that we call human beauty? What is it that we call evil, and how does it manifest itself in the modern world? How does global migration impact our world? How are these issues addressed in literature? These are just some of the questions that will inevitably arise during a discussion with writer Helen Oyeyemi.

Helen Oyeyemi, a highly successful British writer, is one of the guests at the International Literary Festival Vilnius Pages. She has already published six novels. White Is for Witching has won the Somerset Maugham Award, and Mr Fox has received the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. In 2013 Oyeyemi became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In the same year, the author was acknowledged as one of the best young British writers. In 2016 the writer published a collection of short stories What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours.

„I think a faith in stories is an assertion that anything that happens to you does have meaning“ asserts the Nigerian-born writer. When asked why she liked presenting her stories from an evil perspective, Helen Oyeyemi stated that a story about an amoral woman challenged social norms imposed on women, such as the pressure to be always pretty and kind.

Helen Oyeyemi will be interviewed by Jūratė Čerškutė, a literary critic, book reviewer, and scholar (an expert in Ričardas Gavelis’ works). She describes herself in simple terms: ‘I’m a professional reader; it’s nice to meet you.’
